Special Methods
ART THERAPY: Art Therapy is
a field of mental health with its own training and accrediting body. The term Art Therapist is reserved for those who have
a Masters Degree and training in both art and therapy. As a trained Art Therapist, I believe in the inherent healing power
of creativity. Simply stated, making art in session adds something unique to the healing process that does not happen with
talk therapy alone. This approach may help you: - Provide a catharsis and help you 'see' the
situation objectively.
- Gain a fresh perspective
and discover new ways to resolve the conflict.
- Express
yourself fully, especially when words and memories no longer seem effective.
- Awaken
latent images and symbols inside you which inform your healing (much like dreamwork).
- Feel connected to a deeper part of yourself; one that is beyond your familar words &
ways of being.
You do not have to be an artist to make art in session. In fact, lack of
knowledge can be an asset. The focus of making art is personal growth. Plus, making art in session looks different for everyone.
Some people like to watercolor as they talk, for instance. Others prefer I give them a structured activity. Most likely, we
will discuss the art afterwards, allowing the meaning of the image to unfold and inform your healing.
PROCESS
ARTS: Engaging in the process arts is not therapy, although most people describe
it as 'therapeutic'. When art is made, there is the process it took to get there, and the final outcome; the product. Most of the time, people focus on the product. They ask themselves, 'What do I
want the finished product to look like? 'Will it look good once it is done?' You could also consider the product as the emotional
burden of getting it right, or getting it to look just like you have imagined.
In the process arts, you are concerned with the act of creating. There is a final outcome, but it really
a just a record of your process. You are asked to let go of your ideas about what the art should look like and paint
from your inner experience, without any judgment. Once one can let go of the burden of creating for product, and just
BE in the moment of the creative process, there is an experience of absolute authenticity and freedom. The images are alive
and truthful. Engaging in the process arts is like giving yourself a gift of courage, vitality, spark, and peace. I teach this method
to groups or individuals. There are thousands of different ways to structure a process arts training, whether its for a group
or individual. Please contact me to discuss your needs. A different fee schedule may apply.
